Getting Started on a Mac - Arduino Drivers
« on: March 27, 2014, 12:19:01 AM »
Hi All,
looks like I'm one of the first posters... Got my Balanduino today. All built up ok and balances fine when I turn it on. However, haven't managed to get Arduino IDE (r1.5.6r2) to connect or get my PS3 controller to connect.

So, now looking for help with the USB drivers for Arduino IDE for Balanduino. I saw on a image posed on the Balanduino site that it looks like I need a USB driver that presents itself as Balanduino in the boards list but can't find any reference to it on any of the websites, blogs, facebook etc.

Also need to figure out how to pair with PS3 controller. I built a robot a few months ago and used a PS3 controller for that project but the same pairing exercise doesn't seem to work here.

thanks in advance, John

Thank you for your feedback - you are absolutely right. It looks like we forgot to tell that you need install the FTDI drivers as well: http://www.ftdichip.com/Drivers/VCP.htm.
I have updated the getting started page: http://balanduino.net/get-started. Please see the section "Connection and upload" for instructions.

To pair with the PS3 controller please follow the instructions here: https://github.com/felis/USB_Host_Shield_2.0#ps3-library.

Ok, so I was a little premature with the last post.

Seems that the FT230X is supported in Mavericks and so all I needed to do was make sure I restarted the Arduino IDE after connecting the Balanduino.

So, now I'm connected to the bot I need to figure out how to pair my PS3 controller.

Anyway good to hear you got it working!

I believe we posted at the same time, so maybe you haven't seen my response.
You should see the following section of the USB Host library: https://github.com/felis/USB_Host_Shield_2.0#ps3-library.

Btw I have written a Wiki article about the PS3 controller. It is available at the following link: https://github.com/felis/USB_Host_Shield_2.0/wiki/PS3-Information.

Thanks for the feedback.

I did actually install the FT230X drivers from the site - I found them as you were replying. It says on the site that Mavericks supports the device. So, I installed the drivers before reading that... and therefore not sure if I needed them or Mavericks did it automatically.

BTW: I downloaded the balanduino.zip as directed on the gettting started page but the code in the .zip doesn't quite compile. There's an error in Balanduino.ino where VBAT is undefined. I followed this through on github and it looks like the definition got added to the standard Arduino pins_arduino.h. That file isn't in the Balanduino.ino build so I added the #define VBAT 12 to my Balanduino.h to get me going.

This might be something to look at for others trying to follow the instructions.

I'm struggling with avrdude timeouts now when downloading... googling.

There is no need to modify the code!
You have simply not selected the Balanduino board in the drop-downmenu, as indicated on the picture on this page: http://balanduino.net/get-started.

Ok, got it now.

Thanks for your help. I'd overlooked moving the hardware directory into the sketch directory.

No problem :)

Btw I have moved the VBAT define to Balanduiono.h, as it just confuses people: https://github.com/TKJElectronics/Balanduino/commit/e1fd94077a964f17400ab3a48a98c714d9f1ab43.

Confirmed today on two other Macs that you DO need to install the FT230X drivers to get Arduino IDE to talk to the board from a Mac.
